Better Deal for Teachers – Pay offer update
Talks between the NASUWT, DfE and other unions on teachers’ pay for 2022/23 and 2023/24 have now concluded and the Government has made a pay offer, the full details of which can be found here and the letter from the Secretary of State is available here.
What has been the response from the NASUWT and other unions?
General Secretaries of all four unions involved in the negotiations agreed to take the Government’s final offer back to our respective National Executives for consideration.
The NASUWT National Executive met to discuss the final offer on 25th March 2023 and agreed to seek the views of members.
What happens next?
The Government has said that they want unions to put the offer to our members. The Government has also said that if the offer is not accepted, they will revert to the STRB process for the 2023/24 academic year.
Is the NASUWT recommending acceptance or rejection of the pay offer?
The NASUWT National Executive has discussed the Government’s pay offer and is now seeking the views of members. We recognise that members will have their own views about what is on offer, and it is important that we hear directly from members.
The NASUWT is not recommending acceptance of the Government’s offer. The offer falls short of what the Union has demanded from the Government both for pay restoration and on non-pay improvements. The offer in England also does not match the offers in Scotland and Wales and is not fully funded. Nevertheless, we believe that it is right to hear what our members think about the offer as it stands.
What should members do now?
All members who are employed in state funded schools affected by the pay offer are strongly encouraged to give their views using our consultative survey.
Please respond as soon as possible and by 12.00pm on Wednesday 5th April 2023.
Click here to complete the survey. You will be required to provide member verification details at the end of the survey and your membership number is included in the footer of the email in case you need it.
The NASUWT will respond formally to the Government once we have received the response from our members.
